Your path to donation

Preparing for your donation
You are not alone when it comes to preparing for the donation. Our medical team is at your side all the time, taking care of the medical clarification. Blood samples will be taken for the confirmatory typing – and certain infectious markers are tested. Only then will it be decided whether you are suitable for the donation.
The safety and well-being of our donors are particularly important to us. Therefore, before making any donation, we take care to exclude any possible risks and limitations that may arise as a result of the donation.
Exclusions
Every single donation is valuable and helps to save a patient’s life. However, under certain circumstances, you may not be eligible to donate.
The exclusion criteria may be:
- Severe cardiovascular disease
- Cancer
- Severely over-/underweight
- Pregnancy (temporary exclusion)
Before making a donation, it must be ensured that all your important genetic markers match those of the patient and that you are the right donor. As part of this confirmation typing, you must also complete a health questionnaire. The evaluation of this questionnaire is done by our experienced doctors and medical coordinators.
A donation is a special and exciting experience. If you have any questions before or after the donation, you can contact our medical team around the clock (+49 162 7162560).
Preliminary examination and injection instructions
About two to four weeks before the blood stem cell donation, you will be invited for a preliminary examination. A doctor will go through the donation process with you and explain the possible side effects of blood stem cell mobilization and donation. In addition, the doctor will record your medical history and you will receive a physical examination including ECG and ultrasound of the abdominal organs. All this is important to determine if your physical condition allows a donation.
Your blood will also be tested to determine your suitability for donation and to rule out communicable diseases such as hepatitis or HIV.
Organization of your donation
Blood stem cell donation always involves a great deal of organizational effort. This planning will be done by our experienced medical coordination team.
This includes all appointments and procedures between the transplant clinic, the collection center, and the donor – i.e. you – so that your donation goes smoothly.
